aplenty for theKookaburras last night.Brent Livermore playedknowing that his wife willdeliver their second childany day, and Bevan Georgesat in the stands, celebratinghis birthday with a sorethroat and a stomach bug. Then there was theiropponent, New Zealand, which needed to beat theAustralians outright to followthem into tomorrow?s semifinals.Instead, it was theKookaburras who kept theirconcentration and cementedtheir spot at the top of theirpool. The 5-2 win sent the Australiansinto a semi-finalclash with Malaysia, whichthey beat comfortably in twowarm-up matches early thismonth. It also condemnedthe New Zealanders to theminor- place play-off , andbeckoned England back intothe medal chase. The Malaysians had wontheir way through earlieryesterday, after posting ahuge losing score againstPakistan. The 6-5 loss meantMalaysia finished equal withIndia on points and on goaldifference, but movedthrough because it hadscored two more goalsthroughout the tournament. After a nil-all first half lastnight, the New Zealandersneeded to find space toscore. They opened thegame up, but Australiascored first. Gareth Brooksthen slotted an equaliser forthe Black Sticks, and thegame then opened up. LiamDe Young sat on the end of aMichael McCann deflectiontwo minutes later, and Kiwiteenager Simon Child levelledthe scores one moreminute on. A Luke Doernerflick wrenched the lead back, goals to Grant Schubert andJamie Dwyer settling thescore.Livermore, whose wifeBelinda, is due to give birthon goldmedal day, was satisfiedwith his side?s first-halfpatience, and confident itwas good preparation forMalaysia, who play a similarlydefensive game. Georgeshould be back for thatmatch.``There?s a lot of trust andbelief in each other, trust inour preparation, belief inwhat we?re able to achieveand in understanding differentsituations,??
